Tie Replacement, Re-surfacing, Lining, Lifting and Levelling of Track, Crossing Rehabiliation

Keeping a Heritage Line on Track 2025
In 2025, Prairie Rail Solutions was tasked with one of the most critical infrastructure projects in Prairie Dog Central Railway’s history: restoring 17.5 miles of aging mainline track while keeping a full operating season on schedule.
After more than a decade of operating on limestone ballast, the corridor was showing serious wear. Tie decay, drainage failures, mud-pumping, alignment issues, and deteriorated crossings were creating growing safety and compliance risks. Several sections were approaching regulatory thresholds.
The line needed real work. Not patches. Not temporary fixes.
It needed to be rebuilt properly.
The Challenge
With more than 15,000 riders and 40 sold-out trains scheduled, service continuity was essential. Any extended shutdown would impact tourism, revenue, and community confidence.
At the same time, multiple track segments required immediate attention to prevent derailment risk and regulatory intervention.
PRS was asked to deliver both:
· Major rehabilitation
· Zero disruption
The PRS Approach
Rather than expanding manpower, Prairie Rail Solutions focused on capability.
The team mobilized:
· Case 695SV Backhoe with BTE Tube Talon
· Recommissioned Mark II Tamper
· Recommissioned Bert Pyke Ballast Regulator
· Integrated maintenance planning
An eight-person crew was deployed with industrial-level productivity.
Small team. Serious output.
Execution
From April to July, PRS crews targeted the most critical sections first.
Work included:
· Tie replacement
· Ballast renewal
· Track lifting, lining, and levelling
· Drainage improvements
· Crossing rehabilitation
· Subgrade stabilization
Within five weeks:
· Nearly 500 ties replaced
· Over 250,000 lbs of granite ballast installed
· Major risk zones eliminated
This work allowed Prairie Dog Central Railway to open on time—fully compliant and operational.
Keeping Operations Moving
While rehabilitation continued, PRS worked closely with operations staff to maintain safe service throughout the season.
Through targeted surfacing, frequent inspections, and adaptive scheduling, the line ran without interruption.
Customers rode. Trains ran. Standards were met.
Continued Improvements
Work continued throughout the season, including:
· Ongoing tie renewal
· Additional ballast installation
· Drainage corrections
· Reconstruction of a severely sunken crossing
Each upgrade strengthened long-term reliability and reduced future maintenance risk.
Year One Results
By the end of 2025:
· 2,000 ties replaced
· 1.25 million lbs of ballast installed
· 400+ equipment hours logged
· Multiple high-risk segments stabilized
· Full operating season delivered
The corridor moved from “at risk” to “on track.”
Long-Term Commitment
This project represents the first phase of a five-year rehabilitation program focused on:
· Progressive renewal
· Preventative maintenance
· Geometry optimization
· Enhanced inspections
The goal is simple: build infrastructure that lasts.
